Beirne puts hand up for LNP Senate seat

Beirne, CEO of Australian Fashion Partners, said the current government did not have an understanding of commercial realities and suggested a wake-up call was needed.

He argued for retaining a flexible manufacturing capability in Australia and suggested that without these systems in place, the capability for young designers to enter the marketplace and build businesses would disappear.

“The ideology being used by the current government is to reinforce a pay structure and industrial relations processes mired in a 1950s mindset that will kill this country,” he said.

“We need people in Parliament who have hired, fired and gone through and come out the other side of economic downturns to put their skills sets and knowledge to greater use in forming policies and processes.”

Beirne pointed to his long history in the industry having witnessed the past three recessions and recalled the Button Plan that had reshaped the industry.

“There is no reason, in any shape or form, to re-introduce protectionism into the industry,” he said.

“But we also need to have the gumption, at governmental level, to create appropriate mechanisms to ensure our manufacturing, distribution and design are protected against the predatory practices of trading partners.”

As an example, he pointed to the after-effects of China’s entry into the World Trade Organisation (WTO). He suggested product had been dumped into Australia after the US and Europe re-introduced quotas some months after China was admitted to the WTO.

Beirne confirmed the next stage after his expression of interest to run for an LNP Senate seat in Queensland was for the LNP to call for nominations. Approved candidates from that process would then stand for preselection to compete for a seat in the 2013 election.

I wish him the very best of luck.
We urgently need someone in parliament from the TCF Industries with top level managerial experience who understands the problems facing our indusdry and can advise on ways and means of improving our industry.
Presently there is no one there on either side of politics.

Dominic, i wish you the very best, I also would love to see in parliament a little more understanding and experience in small business in all sectors, after all we employed a very large number of the population and i dont feel anyone is on our side. Manufacturing in the mid to top end of the market here has huge potential. I would like to see support for that and stop the give up attitude that we should all go off shore to produce. Germany is in the healthy position right now due to their skills in manufacturing high quality products across the board. We can too before it is too late.

Dominic, I wish you the very best too. You understand the industry so well and can indeed be vocal about the issue within it. We need someone like you in the government who can speak up for the TCF industry.

Dominic - Good Luck. Perhaps with the right business acumen we could do some value adding to our wool, cotton and bast fibres within Australia instead of sending it away raw and buying it back with the value added elsewhere.

Thanks everyone. If the industry is to get the Canberra support it needs I firstly need your support to make my election happen.

I will be establishing a facebook page and twitter feed to help get a groundswell going. Please use any and all avenues to persuade the LNP in Qld to put me in a winnable position on the Senate ticket, and as a starting point share this article through as many networks, whether they be online and social or real world and physical, as you can.

I am humbled by your supportive comments already.

Cheers

Dom

I have created a new Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/dominicbeirneforthesenate to support my bid for preselection. Please take a look and like it to assist in convincing the LNP to put me in a winnable position on the LNP senate ticket in the 2013 federal election
